Wash Over Me (I Wanna Feel Your Love)
I love this song. I wrote it about the things that make me feel close to… well… The Universe. I’d say God, but that word has too many connotations.
I Wanna Colour The Stars
I forgot to add this before, I started writing this song in a songwriting class with Keppie Coutts at the Open Academy years ago and then did a bit extra work on it in the classes I took with Berklee Online last year. I really like this song, because I like a happy ending.
Love Is Cold
While completing a class at Berklee Online I finished this song. Most of this production was completed in GarageBand, although I bought Logic Pro X in the last week of the class. It still requires a little editing, but it is a really different sound to my usual acoustic guitar + vocal work, and I’m really excited about the potential here.
I Cannot Swim to the Other Side
This was the second song I wrote for my songwriting class. I Cannot Swim to the Other Side. The brief was to write a song that had three verses and a chorus and we had to use the lyric “but alas, I cannot swim to the other side.” This is a line form a Laura Marling song – my partner recognised the line immediately, but she has a broader listening range than I. We were practicing developing the narrative of the song and I found the box method the teacher was talking about (a’la Pat Pattinson) particularly useful. (Although when Pat Pattinson explained it himself in a MOOC I was doing I found the concept particularly monotonous). This is helpful for me because I find it very difficult to complete songs. I actually produced a proper mastered version of this last year, I’ll post soon for contrast.

Battery Bunny
I wrote this song about 20 years ago. Part of my project here at The Bashful Songwriter is recording and publishing my “back catalogue.” Many of these songs are lost to the sands of time, but there are a few that I won’t forget. Obviously this song requires a bit of work, but even in the few minutes it took me to record this song I realised that I could easily write a solo over the top in a pentatonic scale. I look forward to giving these old songs a bit of attention.
Fly Away
Again, I wrote this song more than 20 years ago. And again, as with Battery Bunny I can see some easy ways to finesse this song. This really is one of my favourite songs of all time. It expresses so much of the frustration I was feeling at that time and I can still feel the catharsis when I sing it now. But you know, maybe a second verse would make it work a little better… XD
